El Hadj El Hachemi Guerouabi - Saki Baki (mandole cover by James).
A piece of music by Guerouabi that takes my mind back to the Casbah of Algiers; seeing his photo displayed in the workshop of artisan craftsman, Khaled Mahiout while I explored Mahiout’s magnificent woodcarvings and furniture designs, later heading up to the rooftop terrace with glorious views over the casbah and the Mediterranean Sea. The interesting thing about El Hachemi Guerouabi is that he normally played the 12 string mandole which you don’t often find, but it’s still possible to interpret his music with the 8 string mandole. D, A, D, G tuning, as used in many of the classic Algerian Chaâbi songs.
