El Hachemi Guerouabi - Belagh Slami El Djazair. Mandole cover played by James.
Sahit to the YouTube user The Maestroy for letting me know about this song.
El Hadj El Hachemi Guerouabi (January 6, 1938 - July 17, 2006) was an Algerian singer and composer, one of the grand masters of the Algiers-based Chaâbi music. Two passions occupied Guerouabi's childhood: football and music. Being a good footballer, he played the sport until 1952. He then developed a special interest in music; in particular the music of El Hadj M'Hamed El Anka (grand master and inventer of the mandole.) After the independence of Algeria from France in 1962, Guerouabi saw the invasion of foreign music as a threat to traditional Algerian music and he sought to keep the chaâbi genre alive in the hearts of new generations. He’s known for playing the 12 string mandole which you don’t often find.
